| Did You Know? Disc injuries may be diagnosed as “bulged”, “herniated” or “ruptured”. Bulging Disc refers to a disc that has become misshapen over time. This can be caused by chronic poor posture or repetitive stress as seen with bending, lifting or twisting. A Herniated Disc occurs when the tough outer layers of the disc partially tear. If a Disc Herniation worsens to the point that the jelly center of the disc escapes, it is called a Disc Rupture. | Herniated Discs / Disc HerniationsThe Discs of the Spine:: An Overview
The spinal bones are separated by tough cartilage pads called intervertebral discs (inter means “between”; vertebral meaning “bones of the spine”). Healthy discs are thick and flexible (like wet sponges) allowing a wide range of motions. Unhealthy discs are stiff and hard (like a dry sponges) and much more prone to injuries such as bulges or herniations. Over time gravity, spinal joint dysfunction and cumulative trauma can cause the discs to compress, flatten and degenerate. This constant compression doesn not allow much-needed oxygen and nutrients to enter the disc. This ongoing starvation causes the outer fibers of the disc to soften allowing the disc to become injured. Disc injury can occur anywhere in the spine. However, the discs of the cervical spine (neck) and lumbar spine (low back) are the most commonly injured. The most effective treatment available to heal Herniated Discs is Non-Surgical Spinal Disc Decompression using the DRX9000 Spinal Decompression Unit. Injuey and disease of the spinal discs can take many forms. Significant disc damage can lead to a Disc Bulge, worsen to become a tear called a Disc Herniation or the inner jelly-like material of the disc can leak out in the case of a Disc Rupture. The gelatinous center of the disc can also dry out over time which is referred to as Degenerative Disc Disease. All forms of disc injury can eventually "pinch" on the nerves exiting the spine (“Pinched Nerve”) which can lead to numbness, tingling, burning or sharp pain radiating down the arms or legs. Sharp pain “shooting” down the legs is often referred to as Sciatica.
Herniated Disc / Disc Herniation:: DefinitionA Herniated Disc occurs when the very tough outer fibers of the intervertebral disc tear allowing the “jelly-center” of the disc to bulge or herniate outward. A Herniated Disc is generally considered to be more serious than a Disc Bulge where the outer wall of the disc is weakened and misshapen, but not torn. Herniated Disc / Disc Herniation:: SymptomsMost symptoms caused by a Herniated Disc are related to spinal nerve irritation. The nerves exit the spine through small holes called foramen. The spinal discs are located next to these nerve pathways. The Herniated Disc can impinge upon these nerves creating a variety of painful and debilitating symptoms.
Herniated Disc of the Low Back:: Lumbar Spine Disc HerniationA Herniated Disc in the lumbar spine (low back) can cause low back pain, numbness symptoms, tingling symptoms, burning pain, sharp pain or weakness in the legs or feet. Sharp pain shooting down the back of the legs is often referred to as Sciatica. Herniated Disc of the Neck:: Cervical Spine Disc HerniationA Disc Herniation in the cervical spine (neck) can cause neck pain, or in more severe cases, numbness, tingling, burning pain, sharp pain or weakness into the arms or hands. Herniated Disc:: Non-Surgical Disc Decompression with DRX9000Non-Surgical Disc Decompression provides relief to severe neck and back pain sufferers by eliminating nerve pressure caused by Herniated Discs. The bones of the spine are slowly and methodically separated using the DRX9000 Spinal Decompression equipment. As the vertebrae are "pulled apart" pressure is slowly reduced within the disc (intradiscal pressure decreases) until a vacuum is formed. This negative pressure vacuum “sucks” the gelatinous center of the disc back inside the disc thereby reducing the size of the Disc Herniation. Significant Disc Herniation reduction removes pressure off the spinal nerves and drastically reduces pain and disability. This vacuum also "sucks" much-needed oxygen and nutrients into injured discs allowing the healing to begin. The DRX9000 Spinal Decompression treatment motion is computer controlled to provide gentle and painless decompression of the injured spinal discs. The DRX9000 decompression separates slowly and cycles between brief moments of pulling and relaxing called oscillation. This reduces protective muscle spasm that contributed to the high failure rate of outdated “traction” techniques. One of the latest advances incorporated into the DRX9000 is Angulated Elongation. This method allows the DRX9000 Spinal Decompression Unit to target specific discs of the spine (for example: L5/S1 at the base of the spine). This way the treatment relies less on brute force (separating multiple levels with higher force) and more on finesse (using less decompressive force by focusing on a single spinal segment at a time) to rehabilitate individual spinal discs.
